Testing Protocol

Power reserve testing followed a strict protocol: each movement was fully wound (40 crown rotations for manual, 8 hours on an automatic winder for automatic), then placed dial-up in a static position. Time continued to run until complete stop. Timegrapher readings were taken at 0h, 24h, 48h, and every 6 hours thereafter until stoppage. Ambient temperature was maintained at 22°C ±1°C.

Results Summary

Average measured power reserve across 50 samples: VS3235 71.2h (advertised 70h, 102% of spec), DD4130 73.8h (advertised 72h, 103%), VS3135 50.3h (advertised 48h, 105%), DD3285 69.1h (advertised 70h, 99%), Asian 2836-2 42.5h (advertised 38-42h, range), Miyota 9015 42.8h (advertised 42h, 102%). All major clone calibers met or exceeded their advertised power reserve in controlled testing.

Amplitude Drop-off

Amplitude degradation over the power reserve period is a more telling metric than total runtime. At 0h, average amplitude across all calibers was 287°. At 50% of power reserve, amplitude averaged 264°. At 75%, 238°. At 90%, 195°. Below 200° amplitude, rate stability degrades significantly. The VS3235 showed the best amplitude retention curve, maintaining 220°+ through 85% of its power reserve.

Automatic Winding Efficiency

Testing with a simulated wear pattern (8 hours of motion, 16 hours static), the VS3235 achieved full wind recovery within 6 hours of motion. The DD4130 required 7.5 hours. The DD3285 required 8 hours. Asian 2824-2 clones varied wildly, with some recovering full wind in 4 hours and others never exceeding 80% charge. Consistent winding performance is a distinguishing feature of top-tier clone calibers.

Long-term Power Reserve Stability

Power reserve was retested on the same 50 movements after 6 months of intermittent use. Average degradation: VS3235 2.1%, DD4130 3.4%, VS3135 1.8%, DD3285 4.2%, Asian 2836-2 8.5%. Power reserve loss exceeding 10% indicates lubrication degradation, mainspring fatigue, or excessive friction — any of which warrant servicing. Most top-tier clones maintain stable power reserve within acceptable tolerances through 12 months.
