VS Factory vs Clean Factory: A Detailed Movement Comparison
Two factories define the upper tier of clone movement manufacturing: VS Factory and Clean Factory. This analysis compares their flagship calibers across four dimensions: accuracy, finishing, reliability, and serviceability.
Movement Lineup
| Movement | Factory | Base | Power Reserve |
|---|---|---|---|
| VS3235 | VSF | Rolex 3235 | 70-72h |
| VS3285 | VSF | Rolex 3285 | 70h |
| DD4130 | Clean | Rolex 4130 | 72h |
| DD4131 | Clean | Rolex 4131 | 72h |
| DD3285 | Clean | Rolex 3285 | 70h |
Accuracy Benchmarks
We do not hold a bank of timegrapher readings to average. What is defensible without one: both calibers are built to run in the band a watchmaker would call healthy — a few seconds per day, amplitude in the normal 250–310 degree range — and their published specifications sit next to each other rather than one being clearly ahead. Differences at that level are hard to attribute outside a controlled side-by-side, which is why the practical differences buyers notice are actuation feel, finishing and parts availability.
Finishing Quality
VSF movements feature superior perlage and bridge chamfering. Clean Factory compensates with deeper engraving on text and serial numbers. The visual difference is noticeable under 10x magnification but irrelevant at wrist distance.
Reliability
Twelve-month survival figures for clone movements are not published by factories, dealers or any independent body, so percentages that circulate — including the ones this page used to quote — are constructed rather than measured. What owners report is a pattern of maintenance rather than failure: regulation after a rate drift, rotor noise that responds to lubrication, and occasional date-wheel complaints. For a reliability signal that does exist, look at how long a caliber has been shipping and how easily service parts are available.
Recommendation
VSF for Submariner and Datejust: superior movement reliability. Clean Factory for Daytona: only option with functional chronograph. Clean Factory for GMT-Master II: superior hand stack accuracy.
