The Evolution of Clone Movements: From Decorated ETA to Full Clone Calibers
The clone movement industry has transformed dramatically. This article traces the four-phase evolution from modified generic movements to today's fully cloned proprietary calibers.
Phase 1: ETA-Based (Pre-2018)
Early clones used generic ETA 2824 or 2836 movements with cosmetic rotor decorations. Reliable but functionally unrelated to genuine Rolex calibers. Power reserve: 38-42 hours.
Phase 2: Decorated Clones (2018-2020)
The SA3135 emerged: an ETA movement modified to resemble the Rolex 3135. It looked correct but suffered from reliability issues and lacked genuine power reserve specifications.
Phase 3: Hybrid Movements (2020-2022)
VR3135 and VS3135 were purpose-built Rolex clones, not modified ETAs. Power reserve reached 48-60 hours. Hand setting direction was corrected. A major reliability improvement.
Phase 4: Full Clone Calibers (2022-Present)
VS3235, DD4130, and DD3285 are ground-up clones achieving 70-72 hour power reserves, COSC-level accuracy, and genuine complication functionality. The gap from genuine movements has narrowed to cosmetic differences.
